Senior County Foursomes at Blackwell G.C. on 9th May 2016
Grenville Rose hits, what turned out to be, the winning shot on the par three 9th hole. After a tense playoff over the 3rd, 8th and 9th holes it all came down to the intimidating 9th hole. A strengthening, gusty wind faced Martin Cartwright and Grenville Rose as they attempted to negotiate the water to a tightly placed pin at the front right of the green. Unfortunately, Martin's shot fell short into the lake and Grenville put the 3 wood away and quickly changed his club to a driver, which proved to be the right decision as it just made the carry. Tom Mooney's pitch held up in the wind and fell just short, ending up in the lake. It was at that point the pairs shook hands to declare the match over.
Sixty Seniors, the largest entry ever achieved, competed for the County Foursomes Title at Blackwell Golf Club. The course is undergoing some extensive work to improve the bunkers and for those who haven't played there for some time, it was impressive to see the amount of tree and shrub clearance work that has been carried out. The pin positions chosen for the competition were very testing and the firm, tricky greens were a constant challenge. The hospitality shown to everyone by the bar and catering staff was first class and the County would like to thank everyone at the club for their excellent support in hosting this annual event.
The County Officials; Denis Hayes, Jim Gray, Dave McDermott, Tony Edwards (Referee) John Whitehead (Referee) and Stuart Pritchard did a stering job throughout the day and earned high praise from many new competitors who were playing in their first County Seniors event.
