Worcs County Seniors V Lincolnshire – The Vale 29th August 2013

We welcomed the Lincs team last Thursday at The Vale Golf Club. The weather was fine and sunny and there was a breeze from the North.

The course looked immaculate and I was to discover that the set up was identical to that they present to the Jamega Tour event held each year. Thankfully they placed us at the back of the white tees as the course measures over 7500 yards off the blue tees.

As the results came in after the morning greensomes it was very evident that this would be a hard well fought match. Bill Thompson/Bryan Swain experienced a tight match but came through with a one hole win. Charlie Smith/Terry Lawson found their opponents too strong and lost 3/2. Willie Kerr/Laurence Hawker reported another tight match and they managed a 2/1 victory. Grenville Rose/Martin Cartwright and the pairing of Phil White/John Swann both had close matches losing out with the last put on the last green. Mike O’Donnell/Gordon Bailey played well and came in with an impressive 3/2 win

At three all at lunch everything was to play for. Bill Thompson/Terry Lawson matched birdie with birdie and beat a very strong pairing by two holes. It was reported that the tough 456yd 13th hole was halved in birdies so the standard was very high indeed. Charlie Smith/Bryan Swain were also solid throughout and won by the margin of 2/1. Laurence Hawker/Grenville Rose came in with reports of a close match but their form carried them through to a well needed win. Martin Cartwright/Willie Kerr reported a close match and a halved match reflected the encounter. The match was sealed when John Swann/Gordon Bailey reported a close match and a win at the last hole. Phil White/Mike O’Donnell were up against in form opponents who carried their morning standards to the afternoon match and Worcs lost the last game by two holes. The final match result was 12 to 6 for Worcestershire.

The two Captains agreed to alter the team pairings to accommodate two players that were schoolboy friends and had not seen each other for over 40 years. I was witness to the reunion but it did not alter the fact that they were both desperate to win and both players played to a very high standard.

Thanks must go to The Vale for supporting this event. Their course was up to the promised tournament standard and all players were impressed with the condition and detail. Their club and bar facilities were also impressive.
