Seniors County Championship - Hollywood GC - Monday 11th July 2016 - REPORT
The rearranged 2016 WUGC Seniors Championship took place at Hollywood GC on Monday 11th July, after being called off on the original date of 20th June. The County would like to express their thanks to Hollywood GC who agreed to the rearranged date, and provided a course in excellent condition despite the unsettled conditions over the previous days. Indeed the welcome from everyone at Hollywood GC was both friendly and professional.
The weather threatened rain all day, but in the end there were only a few scattered spots. However, the blustery conditions meant that the course was playing quite difficult all day long. The greens were in perfect condition, and many of the players took full advantage with some excellent scoring.
There were two gross 74s from Will Painter (Kidderminster) and Laurence Hawker (Kings Norton) as well as a fantastic 75 from Willie Kerr (Redditch), all of which could have won on a different day. However, the ever steady Bill Thompson (Kings Norton) shot a 73 to take the best gross prize, The Nevill Carroll Salver.
Bill Thompson with the Nevill Carroll Salver won for best gross of 73. Bill will now represent Worcestershire at the English County Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa GC on Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th September 2016.
Laurence Hawker's 74 gross, nett 68, was to edge out Willie Kerr (75 gross, 69 nett) for the nett prize, The Denis Hayes Salver. This is the first time anyone has successfully defended the Denis Hayes Salver and a fantastic performance from Laurence. He also received a dozen Titliest Pro V1's which was donated by the green staff at Hollywood GC.

In his presentation speech, Will Painter (WUGC President) was full of praise for the condition of the course, and thanked the greens staff for their good work. In addition, Will thanked all the volunteers who made the day run so smoothly. These included Tony Edwards and John Whitehead (referees), Alec Mackie (starter) and administration desk work by Rex Harrison, Dave McDermott and Denis Hayes.
