Seniors County Championships at Hagley GC on Friday 22nd June 2018

The 39th annual Seniors County Championship was held at Hagley GC on Friday 22nd June 2018. The select field was greeted by a course in absolutely stunning condition, and a day of unbroken sunshine. The event is split into best gross and best nett overall, with additional prizes for best gross and best nett in 4 age groups - a system that keeps everyone interested until the final score has been posted.

In the first group out Gary Bristow (Redditch) posted a gross 77, which some of the officials thought might be a competitive score on the testing Hagley GC course. Roger Martin (Kings Norton) in the 3rd group posted a creditable 79, which was to be matched by Darron Henn (Gaudet Luce), Bryan Swain (Stourbridge) and Willie Kerr (Redditch). Bill Thompson (Kings Norton) carded a 78. However, in the penultimate group Steve Carpenter (Stourbridge) signed for an impressive 76, to take the Nevill Carol Salver, and become the Senior County Champion for 2018.

In the nett event, there were several 75s from Paul Innes (Churchil & Blakedown), Roger Martin (Kings Norton), Lyndon Tyler (Hagley), Martin Cartwright (Fulford Heath), and Graham Yardley (Hagley). Gary Bristow (Redditch), Bryan Swain (Stourbridge), and Steve Carpenter posted 74s. The winning score was to be 73 with two players posting this excellent score - Darron Henn (Gaudet Luce) and Willie Kerr (Redditch). Darron Henn took the Denis Hayes Salver with a better back 9.

The presentations were made by Geoff Tibbetts (Hagley GC Captain) who welcomed everyone to the club and hoped that everyone had enjoyed the course. The players confirmed that they had found the course to be in fantastic condition, and a tough, but fair test of golf.

In response, Grenville Rose (WUGC President) thanked Hagley GC for hosting the competition and (having played himself) was able to confirm that the course condition was nothing short of exceptional. He asked Geoff to pass on thanks to greens manager Brian and his team for producing the course in such beautiful condition.

Grenville also thanked Rex Harrison and Dave McDermott for doing the starting; the referees Tony Edwards, Brenda Binnie and John Brothwood, and the administration team of Debbie Pritchard, Dave McDermott, Denis Hayes and Jim Gray. Grenville also thanked the bar and catering staff.

The County hopes to return to Hagley GC for other major events in 2019.
