Match Report - County Seniors 6 at Woodhall Spa
14th August 2013
The Senior Six Team at Woodhall Spa
LtoR : Alan Robinson, John Swann, Steve Carpenter, Brian Morris ( on wall) Bryan Swain, Will Painter and Bill Thompson
The County Six’s qualifying event took place on the 14th August 2013 at the Bracken Course at Woodhall Spa. Every year ten Midland Counties each put a six man team together and play 18 holes stroke play off scratch. The overall team winner then has the privilege to travel to the National Finals as the Midland’s Qualifier.
Worcestershire’s Team comprised of Bill Thompson (1) Chris Norman (1) Alan Robinson (2) Steve Carpenter (3) William Painter (4) and Bryan Swain (5)
The Bracken course is real test of golf with greens that have multiple slopes on them. With a 3 hour journey it was sensible to travel up the day prior to the event and take advantage of a practice round.
The day of the event revealed breezy conditions and a course in an immaculate condition. The weather forecast was also good although rain and a weather front was due in towards the end of play.
Play started at 10 am and it became very obvious that the greens had been ironed to such an extent that they were quite a few feet quicker than the previous day. This added to the complexity as any ball finishing above the hole was a challenge to get down in two putts. Brian Morris and I witnessed time and again players struggling to cope with the slopes and sheer pace that confronted them and it was no surprise that scores were high when the players completed their rounds.
The best round of the day went to a Staffordshire player who went round in 3 under par, some six shots better than the second placed competitor. Scoring was so difficult that the SSS went from 72 to 75 and only 13 players in the whole field bettered 80 gross.
Bill turned in a fabulous performance and came in with a par round of 75 followed by Will on 80, Bryan 82 and Alan, Chris and Steve with 83. A total of 403 for the Team against the Lincolnshire’s winning total of 395. Our final placing was fifth overall out of ten Counties that participated.
Team events like these are most stressful as you are constantly aware that every shot is important for the overall result and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Team for putting themselves up to the plate and performing so well. Yes there were moments when they could have made a different decision but I would suggest that most players can say that after every round.
I came away from Woodhall knowing that Worcestershire had competed to a very high standard and I was impressed with the support and team spirit displayed by every member. On a different day I would not be surprised to find the same team winning such an event.
