Seniors lose 11-7 against Leics; 17th April 2013

Worcs Seniors Versus Leicester Seniors – Hinckley 17th April 2013

The match finally got under way after most of the Team experienced traffic difficulties following various accidents on the M6 and surrounding areas. The weather was free of rain but the wind was strong and threatening to get worse.

Bill Thompson/Grenville Rose were comfortable winners in the morning greensomes but that was the only good news we got before lunch. Laurence Hawker/Willie Kerr experienced a tough match against worthy opponents and lost by 4 and 3. The remaining 4 matches all were very close but went to the Leicestershire side. Ricky Chima/Bryan Swain lost 2 and 1 as did John Swann/Nigel Cowley. Peter Adams/Terry Lawson and Leslie Stallard/Ian Dorrell all lost on the last green

Lunch was a quiet affair after the morning’s 5 to 1 deficit. Bill Thompson/Willie Kerr were comfortable with an early lead that they maintained winning 3 and 2. Laurence Hawker/Grenville Rose experienced an in form partnership and lost 3 and 1, however, the revival continued,  with Bryan Swain/Terry Lawson winning at the last and Peter Adams/Ricky Chima winning 2 and 1. At 7 all with two matches to come the atmosphere was becoming a little more charged. Unfortunately, John Swann/Ian Dorrell lipped out for a birdie at the last only then to witness a 15 foot chip in down the steep slope for a half and a loss of 1 hole. Leslie Stallard/Nigel Cowley struck the ball well but could not impact on their deficit and went down by 2 holes. The overall result finished at 11 to 7.

On reflection, Leicester handled the gale force winds better than we did in the morning session. They also had an advantage of knowing the quirkiness of some of the holes which did make a difference. The second hole seemed to catch out a number of our players as there were a couple of large oaks penalising a straight drive and the preferred route turned out to be well to the right hand side of the fairway. The course was well presented given that all growing conditions are at least a month behind. Our thanks go to Hinckley for their kind courtesy and we look forward to the return fixture next year.
