Seniors Matchplay Championship - Stourbridge GC
The 2014 Seniors Matchplay Championship was played over the weekend of Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August at Stourbridge Golf Club. The first round was played on Saturday, and produced wins for Gordon Bailey, Roger Martin, Willie Kerr and Bill Thompson. There was an exciting finish to the Bill Thompson v Bryan Swain match, with Bill holing a 30ft birdie putt on the 18th to take the match into extra holes - Bill eventually winning on the 19th.
The fours semi-finalists arrived at Stourbridge Golf Club before 8.00am on Sunday morning. The course was once again in superb condition, with all the players commenting on the fantastic greens. Morning victories for Bill Thompson and Roger Martin could not have come in more different circumstances: Bill played some quality golf to win 6&5, whilst Roger Martin had a titanic battle with Gordon Bailey, eventually winning on the 20th hole by hitting his second shot within 2 feet of he flag, for a conceded birdie 3.
The final was to see the best golf of the whole weekend, with Bill Thompson holing a putt for a birdie 2 on the 12th green to go 3 under par and complete a convincing victory.
The County would like to thank Stourbridge Golf Club for hosting this event and for the hospitality shown to the players and officials over two days, by all the staff and members. Special thanks must go to the greens staff who presented a course in as good a condition as any seen by the County over the whole of 2014.
