The Senior Team at Bourn GC on Thursday 9th May 2019 for their friendly match against Cambridgeshire. (l-r) Pete Craddock, Roger Martin, Ian Warner, Grenville Rose, David McGillivray, Ian Smith, Pete Desmond, Paul Newman (Captain), Tony Sanders, Steve Green, Gary Bristow & Martin Mahon.
It would be a great shame if this friendly match against Cambridgeshire had to be cancelled in the future, due to the distance that both counties have to travel to get to their away fixture. After dinner I suggested that maybe we could play the fixture at a neutral venue half way between the counties.
Ian Robinson, Cambridgeshire stand in captain for the day, welcomed the Worcestershire senior players to Bourn GC, before we all had breakfast together, and the pairings were announced.
The morning greensomes were all played in great spirit with Cambridgeshire coming out on top - leading 4 - 2.
After a excellent lunch, the Worcestershire team really had to dig deep to overhaul the deficit. With Roger Martin and Paul Newman winning their match on the last hole, this gave the team the incentive to try to at least level the match.
Congratulations to a brilliant performance from Pete Craddock and Martin Mahon for winning both morning and afternoon, ensuring an afternoon score of 7 - 5 in our favour, and resulting in an overall score of 9 - 9.
Match score sheet.
Big thanks to all Worcestershire players for travelling such a long distance and representing the county in a very professional way.
All the staff at Bourn GC looked after both teams excellently so a huge thanks to everyone involved. I have to mention that the food was amazing, and all the players agreed that the golf course was very well presented.
Thank you to our county president Mr David McGillivray for not only playing but for supporting us all.
We are all ready now for our first league match on Tuesday 2nd July at Breadsall Priory GC against Derbyshire.
