Seniors v Cambridgeshire at Thorpe Wood GC 14.9.17

Seniors v Cambridgeshire at Thorpe Wood GC - Thursday 14th Sept 2017

The Senior Team at Thorpe Wood GC

LtoR: Bryan Swain, Gary Bristow, Martin Cartwright, Mark Carpenter, Pete Adams (Capt), Dave Wainwright, Paul Newman, Mick O'Donnell, Pete Craddock, Bill Thompson, Steve Carpenter, Steve Green.

The County Senior team made the long trip to Thorpe Wood GC to play Cambridgeshire in this annual friendly match, their final one of the 2017 season. It was also Pete Adams's last match as the County Senior Captain, after a very successful two year reign.

Thorpe Wood is a municipal course on the edge of Peterborough and is one of the best courses in Cambridgeshire. It was in excellent condition and proved to be a fine test of golf.

The two hour drive through the traffic didn't seem to make any difference to the Worcestershire players and they recorded their best ever greensomes start with a convincing 6-0 lead at lunch. The four balls were hard fought and many matches were under par as they threaded their way through the tree lined avenues over the closing holes. The Worcestershire lads staved off a fightback and improved on their lead, winning the four balls 7-5. The overall result was a very impressive 13-5. Congratulations to Newman& Carpenter, Craddock & Carpenter, Cartwright & Swain and O'Donnell & Wainwright, who all remained unbeaten on the day.

In Pete's final speech he was keen to warmly thank all the players who'd played for him over the two years. He was immensely proud to have been the Seniors Captain and wished his successor, Paul Newman, every success. Paul replied on behalf of the team, thanking Pete for all his efforts and everyone gave Pete a well deserved round of applause. Paul presented Pete a card and some liquid refreshment ( a bottle of red) from all the players.

Overall, it was another very enjoyable golfing day. The hospitality provided and quality of the course were first class. The camaraderie from both teams is what all County matches are about and we look forward to welcoming the Cambridgeshire Seniors to a course in Worcestershire next year.

As the season comes to an end, under Pete Adams's captaincy, the Worcestershire Seniors have won 8 out of their 10 matches whilst coming 2nd in the EGU Midland Qualifier at Hawkstone Park. They're also leading the Midland League table for the West Region at present. Not a bad record record on which to end. Well done Pete.
