Score sheet

The team were well prepared for this final match of the season against Northamptonshire which we expected to be the toughest test of the season. The Henlle Park GC course was presented in excellent condition for the match, and luckily the weather was generally sunny, although a little cool.

The first match out was Bill Thompson and Steve Green, and the game went down the 18th, but Bill and Steve just lost out by the 1 hole.

The second match went well for the team with Paul Newman and Roger Martin winning 5&4.

The other 3 games were very close, and the 14th hole was to prove pivotal in each game, unfortunately in Northamptonshire's favour, with an excellent chip in, a great bunker shot and a long putt.

Andy Baker and Mark Carpenter held on to halve their match, but unfortunately our other pairs were just beaten to the post by some excellent play from the Northamptonshire players.

Alan Wrigley, Northamptonshire Senior County Captain, congratulated the Worcestershire players for winning our league to make the final and pointed out that the final score of 9-3 didn't reflect how close the match was.

The trophy was presented to Northamptonshire by Brian Morris as MGU Senior Organiser, in what was his last official event. I wished him a well deserved retirement after all his hard work on behalf of all the Senior players across the Midlands.

I wanted to thank everyone who turned out to support the team; Alex Bishop from Droitwich GC, past Senior Captain John Swann, County Vice President Dave McDermott, President Elect Dave McGillivray and Stuart & Debbie Pritchard. Also Grenville Rose, County President and past Senior Captain.

Finally, I wanted to say how proud we should all feel following a highly successful season, and I am sure that we will compete strongly again next season.

I am looking forward to seeing all the squad players at Stourbridge GC on 2nd November when we can celebrate with the League Trophy.

Paul Newman, County Senior Captain.
