The Worcestershire Senior Team arrived at Shifnal GC on Tuesday 24th July for the Midland League fixture against Shropshire & Herefordshire.
It was another amazingly hot day, and the course was in fantastic condition, with stunning greens and beautiful fairways. Coupled with a very warm (!!) welcome from S&H Team Captain, Steve Hawke, and a friendly welcome from everyone at Shifnal GC, all the players were looking forward to a great day.
Indeed, Steve and his team were excellent company all day, and the match was played in a friendly atmosphere, with mutual respect. Fixtures such as this one are extremely important, giving everyone the chance to build up long term friendships, even though we may only meet up once a year. Long may this camaraderie continue.
The two teams were also pleased to welcome Ernie Wilkes, S&H President, and Dave McDermott, Worcestershire Vice President, to the match.
The morning foursomes were as tight as ever, with the lunch time score an equitable 3 -3.
In the afternoon, 4 matches went the way of Worcestershire, and 2 went to Shropshire & Herefordshire (a score of 8 -4), such that the overall match score was 11 – 7 in favour of Worcestershire.
Match Score Sheet
I must mention our three pairs that won both their morning and afternoon matches; Bill Thompson (Kings Norton) & Steve Green (Rose Hill); Steve Carpenter (Stourbridge) & Martin Cartwright (Fulford Heath); and Craig Pates (Moseley) & Gary Bristow (Redditch) – a great effort.
I thanked all the players for ensuring they could play for the County on a regular basis, and noted that our good results were down to us having an excellent squad.
The day ended with a splendid meal from the catering team at Shifnal GC. They are famous for their sweet trolley and didn’t disappoint this time, with all the players’ eyes lighting up when the trolley arrived. A perfect end to a perfect day.
We look forward to seeing our friends from Shropshire & Herefordshire at the England Golf County Qualifier at Kedleston Park GC on Thursday 9th August.
