The Worcestershire Team players arrived at Worcester G&CC for what they all knew would be the 2018 Season defining match. The weather was set fine, and after an excellent breakfast there was a team meeting on the putting green. Everyone was reminded that we needed just 9 points to win the league, and we all agreed that it was a privilege to play golf for the County. We knew that Staffordshire would be a very strong team, after beating us last year.
A debut was handed to Shaun Thornhill (King Norton) who was paired with Worcester G&CC member Andy Baker for the day. They should both be congratulated for winning both of their matches under great pressure.
Bill Thompson (Kings Norton) & Steve Green (Rose Hill), Steve Carpenter (Stourbridge) & Martin Cartwright (Fulford Heath) and Ian Smith (Worcester G&CC) & Bryan Swain (Stourbridge) were all unbeaten pairings on the day.
There were lots of very close matches both morning and afternoon, with 6 of the day's 12 matches coming down the 18th, resulting in 5 halved matches. With the match being close, every halved match was to prove vital and the final result was 9 - 9. This was just enough for Worcestershire Seniors to win the West Midlands League for 2018, as they can not now be caught by any of the other teams. A first win in this relatively new Seniors League set up.
I would like to thank all of the players for their great spirit under the most intense pressure. You were all a credit to Worcestershire. I would especially like to thank my partner for the day, Pete Craddock, who played so well and didn't deserve to lose!
Match Score Card
Thanks must also go to everyone at Worcester G&CC for looking after us all so well on the day, especially Andy and his catering team for their excellent food and quality service.
I must also thank the Staffordshire Team, and their Captain Mark Ashton, whose company we all enjoy. It was nice to hand back the "Monkey off our Back" Trophy to Mark, even if it was only to get the engraving upto date for next year's match!
My final thanks go to the supporters who were kind enough to turn up on the day: Dave McDermott, Grenville Rose, Stuart & Debbie Pritchard, Gordon Bailey; and also Tony Edwards, Jim Gray and Alex Bishop, all from Droitwich GC, my home club.
There was a big celebration after the match, and we are already looking forward to the end of season East v West League Winners match against the East League Winners, Northamptonshire, at Henlle Park GC on Monday 22nd October.
