Seniors v Warwickshire at Worcester G&CC - Thursday 13th July 2017
Worcestershire Seniors 11 1/2 v 6 1/2 Warwickshire Seniors
Played at Worcester G&CC on 13th July 2017
Worcester G&CC was in fine condition with the greens running at a good pace to greet the two teams in this Midland League Fixture. There's always an 'extra' edge to the matches against our old rivals, Warwickshire, and as the foursomes were underway it was clear that the competition was as intense as always. Whoever decided on the pin positions for the day clearly wanted to test the players to their maximum capabilities.
Thompson & Green and Carpenter & Swann recorded good wins whilst hard fought halved matches from Cull & Bristow, Newman & Carpenter and Read & Swain ensured the Seniors led 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 at lunch.
The four balls continued to be closely fought matches. The top three pairings for Worcestershire all managed good wins, with Cull & Bristow being five under par for their round until securing victory on the 16th. Read & Swain were up against a pair who seemed to perform 'houdini' style escape acts from the trees and bunkers before they eventually lost on the 18th. Nevertheless, a fine birdie from home player and former Club Captain, Tony Sanders, following a great 2nd shot on the 18th, secured Tony and Ian's 2 hole victory and the overall match was Worcestershire's.
The temperate weather, warm hospitality from everyone at the club, excellent food and great team cameraderie made this another highly enjoyable golfing day for the Seniors. Thank you to everyone at Worcester G&CC for providing both teams with such a well presented course to play on.
We're all looking forward to our next match on Monday July 24th at Moseley GC v S&H in the league.
