Seniors visit to the Vale of Glamorgan 17th & 18th March 2019

As the victorious Welsh Rugby team were vacating their rooms and loading up their cars, 22 County Seniors arrived at the Vale of Glamorgan GC for their pre-season meeting. The trip was in doubt at first due to Saturday's heavy rain but the course held up well and opened up for a practice round on Sunday 17th and a 3 ball alliance competition on Monday 18th.

The hotel facilities were first class and after an excellent meal on Sunday evening the seniors settled down to relax and watch the final round of the Players' Championship at Sawgrass.

A hearty breakfast on Monday morning was greeted with much calmer weather and a chance to mentally prepare for the challenges ahead. Some players were nervous and could be seen waiting in line at the conveniently placed toilet on the 1st tee.

Paul Newman, (Seniors Captain) tried his best motivational lines but as you can see from Shaun's reaction (below) it wasn't quite working.

Despite our best efforts, we couldn't find the head greenkeeper's stimp meter readings and it was later revealed that for some, rescue clubs were needed for third shots into the uphill Par 5 fourth hole.

The competition on Monday was turned into a 3 ball alliance, with one score to count on the first six holes, 2 on the next six and all three on the final six. Rob Buckey, cleaned up by winning both of the nearest the pin prizes and the final team results were:

1st - Steve Green, Mark Birchill and Pete Desmond - 71 pts.

2nd - Bill Thompson, Rob Buckey and Tony Sanders - 69 pts (count back)

3rd - Shaun Thornhill, Grenville Rose and John Swann - 69 pts

Overall, it was an excellent couple of days of good fun, great company and a chance to meet up again before the competitive season gets underway next month. The players would like to give a special thank you to Paul Newman for organising the whole event and for negotiating such a superb deal. They'd also like to specially thank Nigel Cowley, who came along to support, despite having had a recent operation on his shoulder.
