Seniors win 14 -3 against Derbyshire at Maywood
WORCESTER SENIORS MATCH V DERBYSHIRE
12TH JUNE 2013
The morning greensomes went off very well as Laurence Hawker and Phil White had an impressive margin of victory over their opponents. The partnerships of Mike O’Donnell/ Peter Craddock. Bryan Swain/Richard Coverdale and Martin Cartwright/Robert Buckey reported tight matches with Worcestershire winning all at the 9th hole. Our top game of Willie Kerr/Ricky Chima fought away but went down 2 and 1. No points were exchanged in the last greensomes match as agreed by both Captains.
Maywood proved to be quite a test. The 20 year old course was criss-crossed with deep irrigation ditches and ponds. The greens were exceptionally small and were so firm that they would not take a ball regardless how softly it landed. Many players resorted to using a chip and run technique to be competitive. The surfaces of the greens were excellent and reasonably paced. The rest of the course was well manicured and a credit to the 4 green keepers.
In the afternoon four balls Willie Kerr/Ricky Chima turned around their disappointments of the morning round and won 3 and two. Bryan Swain/Richard Coverdale and John Swann/Mike Jarvis reported close matches that eventually finished with halves after 18 holes. Martin Cartwright/Robert Buckey & Laurence Hawker/ Phil White & Mike O’Donnell/Peter Craddock all reported victories although they were close encounters. Overall an exceptional performance with a result of 14 points to Worcestershire and 3 points to Derbyshire.
My sincere thanks go to Derbyshire’s acting Captain, David Wall, who appreciated the predicament that I found myself in and helped to resolve the situation in a friendly and supportive manner.
