Seniors win against Notts 10-8; 5th April 2013

5TH APRIL 2013

We welcomed the Notts Team last Friday at Redditch to find clear and bright conditions. It was soon apparent that the very strong wind had such a chilling factor that the Team members had to wrap themselves up so much they resembled Michelin men. Redditch would prove to be a very long and difficult golf course as the strength of this wind added at least two or three extra clubs.

In the morning greensomes Bill Thompson/Willie Kerr battled hard against excellent opposition and won their match by 2 to 1. Steve Carpenter/John Silvester had a close battle on their hands and won by a close margin. Laurence Hawker/Peter Adams established an early lead and retained that through to the close by beating their opponents by 2 to 1. The same result and similar winning style was accomplished by Bryan Swain/Grenville Rose who managed to win a close match. Terry Lawson/Mike O’Donnell experienced a very close match and lost on the last hole. Philip White/Martin Cartwright witnessed some excellent play by their opponents and could not make impression on the deficit, eventually losing 3 to 2.

So at lunch we were happy with the 4 to 2 lead but more than aware that Notts have a reputation of digging in producing good results. The wind seemed to get even stronger in the afternoon and certainly colder once the sun disappeared. The first match of Bill Thompson/John Silvester was very close aided by a few 3 putts from our Team. Going down the last they were one down. Bill then sank a good 15 foot putt for a birdie and opponent Peter missed a four foot putt to win the match. Steve Carpenter/Willie Kerr were also in a tight struggle and needed a birdie at the last to come in with a half. The severe slope to the front edge of the green was Steve’s downfall as he needed to get down in two from 30 feet. The hole was conceded and Steve/Willie lost by 2 holes. Laurence Hawker/Grenville Rose could not make an impression on their opponents lead and finished up losing 3 and 2. Bryan Swain/Peter Adams were strong throughout their match and finished worthy winners by 4 and 3. All seemed to be going Worcestershire’s way as Terry Lawson/Philip White were one up going down the last. Unfortunately the severe slope was handled better by the Nott’s players and the match finished all square. All was left to the last match of the two rookies, Martin and Mike. They did have the body language of players that had enjoyed their day and announced that they had won by 5 and 4.

So overall a close win by 10 points to 8.

Notts team were under strength due to a clash of fixtures but Worcestershire showed strength and resilience in a very good win.

Thanks must also go to the Redditch Club who prepared their course to the highest of standards bearing in mind that they had only been open a few days after the snow. As I mentioned to their Captain, Tom they make it very easy to do business with as nothing was too much trouble throughout the whole day.
