The 45th Severnside Tournament was hosted by Glamorgan Golf Union at Morlais Castle Golf Club. Morlais Castle is a well established course dating back over one hundred years and it has magnificent views of the Brecon Beacons. As the course is set very high up on the hill side it can be open to the elements and delivers a test of both undulating lies and elevated approaches.
As we sat to discuss the course it became apparent that seven out of our eight players had played the course a couple of years ago in an under fourteens match. This made the practise round a little easier and allowed us to look a little more in depth at the holes as we played around.
Chris Crisp (Worcester G&CC) led the team out in the opening match against the home county and managed to start the team off with a fantastic five and four win. Joe Price (Hagley G&CC) our Captain for the tournament followed with a two and one victory, before Glamorgan fought back to take the middle order games. However a strong finish from Jack Severn (Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club) and Will Stott (Bewdley Pines Golf Club) at the end of our order gave the team a well earned but narrow victory against the hosts.
We decided to stick with a similar order against Gwent as it had worked well against Glamorgan. Once again in form Joe Price and Will Stott managed to win their games, but the others games looked extremely tight. Unfortunately the boys couldn't add any more points to our total, but showed great determination taking the remaining games to the seventeenth or eighteenth hole.
The order was changed slightly for this match and Nathan Slater (Bewdley Pines Golf Club) led the team out. Both Nathan and Joe won their games before Chris unfortunately came up just short on the eighteenth. Will Stott joined Joe with his third win in three games before it all came down to the final match on the course. The boys gathered in the fairway to watch as Ted Pickering (Worcester G&CC) and his opponent both miss the green with their approaches. Ted pitched on and then holed out well before the Gloucestershire player bravely matched Ted to half their game and the match overall.
So an outright second finish in the tournament, just half a match point behind Gloucestershire, who have now won this tournament for the last four seasons. With only one member of our team not available for next season we look forward to travelling to St Mellons Golf Club next year.
