The 60th playing of the Worcestershire Club Foursomes Championship, for The Boulton Salver, was held at Redditch GC on Sunday 14th May 2017. The course was in excellent condition, and the weather was set fair - although the forecast was for showers in the late afternoon, but these never materialised.
The competition format is 36 holes foursomes medal, with the best Nett score taking the Salver. As well as 2nd and 3rd nett prizes, there were also prizes for best overall gross, and best morning and afternoon gross and nett.
At the end of the morning round, the last group out, Ben Myatt and Jack Buckley, from Redditch GC had the best score of 70 nett, but there were many other pairs still in the hunt - notably Dave Wainwright & Colin Bullock from Stourbridge GC (71), Craig Richardson & Callum Hutchinson from Kidderminster GC (73), James Robinson & Steve Bird from Redditch GC (73) and Dan Cook & Ben Bogosian from Stourbridge Gc, also with 73.
With Ben & Jack in the last group out, no-one could be sure of the eventual winners until the final moment. Craig & Callum added a 75 to their morning 73, and their total of 148 put them just in front of Carl Young & Scott Schuck from Droitwich GC whose afternoon 72.5 gave them an overall total of 149. Other notable performances came from Mark Goddard & Craig Blackford from Redditch Kingfisher GC and Dave Wainwright & Colin Bullock (Stourbridge GC) who both finished on 150.

However, Ben & Jack kept their nerve in the final match, returning an impressive nett 69, for a total of 139, which gave them a clear victory to take the Boulton Shield. This was the 2nd year running that Jack had been part of the winning pair.
At the presentation Kevin Creighton, Captain of Redditch GC, welcomed all the players to the club and hoped that everyone had enjoyed their day. Grenville Rose, President of the WUGC, presented the trophy to Ben & Jack and thanked Redditch GC for hosting the event and for presenting the course in such fine condition. Thanks were also given to the volunteers who ran the day - Will Painter, Dave McDermott and Denis Hayes for starting; Dave McDermott, Brenda Smith, Pete Adams and Denis Hayes for helping with the administration; and Tony Edwards, John Whitehead and Clive Werrett for referring.
Normally, the winners of the Salver get to host the event again next year, but County rules state that no club should host the event for more than 3 consecutive years. Redditch GC have now won in 2014 (at Moseley GC), 2015, 2016 & 2017 and thus we will be looking for a new venue for 2018.
