So to the last league fixture of the under sixteen season. This fixture is always a fun event as it’s played as a triangular match between Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire and Herefordshire.
This year’s fixture was hosted by Shropshire and Herefordshire and they had decided to take the event to The Wrekin Golf Club just west of Telford. The Wrekin Golf Club is a very tough test for the boys as its high up on top of the Wrekin hill so has many undulations and the wind can play a big part in decision making.
The team gathered early for breakfast and a team briefing. None of the team had played the course before, but we did have a fair amount of information gathered from a member and the course planner.
As we’ve played through the season a few pairings have now jelled and will continue into next year. However there were one or two new ones that would be interesting to watch.
The foursomes unfortunately did not go well for Worcestershire on this morning, with only a fighting half point from Will Stott and Cameron Green, and two fine points won by the new pairing of Dan Doyle and Harry Chadwick. At lunch we were behind and in need of a big effort in the singles. I can only put this down to a combination of not knowing the course and player fatigue.
At lunch I spoke to each player individually and everyone was up for their individual matches. We expressed to each other the importance of talking to each other on the course and keeping moral high and giving it our all.
The singles matches were a lot closer than the foursomes. As a team we managed to amass eleven points from a possible twenty four with stand out double points victories from Jake Kelly, Jack Severn, Harry Chadwick and Joe Price. It was such a good effort in the afternoon and who knows with a little more luck we possibly could have sneaked a half again Shropshire and Herefordshire.
Thank you to all the officials involved with the organising of this large fixture and also to The Wrekin Golf Club for the use of their course. As always thank you to Mark Ralphs and Stuart Pritchard for all your support throughout the day.
See you at Moseley Golf Club in eleven days time for the Boys Severnside tournament.
