U14 Boys Championship at Evesham GC on 15th August 2017 - REPORT

A select field of 22 players gathered at Evesham GC on Tuesday 15th August 2017 to contest the Worcestershire Boys U14 County Championship. 19 of the boys were in the main event and three boys played a 9 hole competition.

The Evesham GC course was in excellent condition, and everyone at the club provided the players, spectators and officials with a very warm welcome. The day was to remain sunny and dry, despite the forecast of some rain in the afternoon.

The first results of the day were from the 9 hole competition, which was ably marshalled by Tony Edwards. All three players had beautiful swings and are certainly stars for the future. After totting up the scores by the side of the 9th green, it is fair to say that everyone was amazed when all three players scored 61 gross! As a nett competition, Dylan Drumm won with a nett 41.5, Josh Thorp was 2nd with a nett 43, and Oliver Badger was 3rd with a nett 44.5.

The main competition, to be the U14 Boys County Champion, was for the best gross but there were also nett prizes to be won.

James Ilsley (Dudley GC) was to set a challenging target in both categories as one of the first players out, with a gross 79, nett 66 on the par 72 course. Despite excellent gross 82s by both Harvey Jones (Kings Norton GC) and Hugh Adams (Hagley G&CC) no one was to beat James' score and he was eventually declared the Boys U14 Champion. Harvey Jones took 2nd place from Hugh Adams on countback.

In the nett competition there were under par scores from Philipp Krone (Kings Norton GC - 71), Thomas Lennon (Halesowen GC - 71), Harry Brimmell (Gaudet Luce GC - 69), Cassius Blake (Kings Norton GC - 69), Mark Hewlett (Gaudet Luce GC - 68), and an Wakeman (Hagley G&CC - 68). Dan was to take 2nd best nett from Mark on countback, but the nett winner was to be Elliot Jones from Gaudet Luce GC with a nett 67.

During the prize presentations, Dave McDemott (WUGC Vice President) thanked Evesham GC for hosting the event. He specifically thanked the greens team for presenting the course in such good condition and the bar and catering staff for looking after everyone so well all day. Dave also thanked Tony Edwards and Colin Mitchell, the referees, and Debbie Pritchard for helping out on the administration desk all day. He was too modest to thank himself for starting and also helping out on the desk all day.

The day ended with several members from Evesham GC remarking on what a splendid advertisement for golf all the boys were - with their standard of golf, their etiquette and their general politeness and good behaviour. Well done boys!
