16 Boys from across Worcestershire arrived at Churchill & Blakedown GC on Monday 13th August 2018 to contest the 2018 U14 Boys County Championships.
The Churchill & Blakedown course was in excellent condition, with beautifully true greens, and would prove a difficult test for the Boys.
The event is an 18 hole gross medal, with additional nett prizes. The Boys were seeded this year, with handicaps ranging from 29 down to 2, with the lower handicaps playing in the later groups. Thus it was impossible to predict a winner until the last group had finished.
However, in the nett event, Hayden Sarfo (Gaudet Luce) completed a stunning 84 gross, less 22, for a 62 nett in the second group out. Many of the officials thought that this would be a difficult score to beat, and so it proved, with Hayden taking the prize for best nett. With each boy only allowed to win one prize, 2nd nett went to Thomas Lennon (Halesowen) with 81-11=70.
Hayden Sarfo, best nett winner, with Jim Gray.
Thomas Lennon, 2nd best nett.
In the gross event, Sam Rowbottom (Kings Norton) in match number 6 posted a superb 76, and had an agonising wait whilst the final two groups came in. With James Ilsley (Dudley) and Harvey Jones (Kings Norton) posting 80s, and Hugh Adams (Hagley) posting a 79, Sam's score won him the U14 County Championship & The Jim Gray Trophy.
Sam Rowbotton, with the Jim Gray Trophy, and with Jim Gray!
Hugh Adams, 2nd best gross on the day, with a County Certificate presented by Jim Gray, for winning the Reid Trophy last week
Jim Gray presented the prizes, including the Jim Gray Trophy for the U14 Champion. He thanked Churchill & Blakedown GC for hosting the event, all the players for taking part, and all the parents for transporting the players to the event. He also thanked the Churchill & Blakedown staff and the County volunteers.
