Following months of Winter County Coaching by two excellent professionals (Jamie Carney from Kings Norton GC and Simon Gabbitas from Hagley Golf Club) 8 boys from each academy were selected to play each other in a 4 ball better ball format at Bromsgrove Golf Centre.
After days of rainy weather, Saturday afternoon was to be dry and relatively warm, and the course at Bromsgrove GC could not have been in better condition. The fairways were beautifully presented, and the greens were fast and true - making the course a good challenge for the boys.
Jamie Carney's Team (l-r) Lewis Tolley, James Ilsley, James Humphries (Captain), Teddy Fee, Jamie Carney (Coach), Joe Meads, Thomas Blizzard, George Stephens & Harry Hawkesford.
Simon Gabbittas' Team (l-r) Phillip Krone, Callum Jones, Callum Brierley, Sonny Priestley, Simon Gabbitas (Coach), Cassius Blake, Nathan Wood & Tom Lennon (Captain).
After a bacon bap at lunchtime, the two coaches took their team players for a warm up on the driving range and putting green, before everyone headed to the 1st tee to start the matches.
Last minute instructions were given to all the boys by the two coaches on the 1st tee, and they all got off to a good start, despite the pressure of there being a small crowd around the tee.
The quality of golf, and the quality of the boys decision making, was praised by both coaches throughout the afternoon. It was clear that the winter coaching was producing the desired results, and whilst not everyone could win, it was important that the boys showed the right attitude and endeavour throughout their match.
The first match was a close affair, with Phillip Krone (Kings Norton) & Tom Lennon (Halesowen) just edging out James Ilsley (Stourbridge) & James Humphries (Redditch).
The second match ended in victory for Harry Hawkesford (Bromsgrove) & Tom Blizzard (Bromsgrove) over Cassius Blake (Kings Norton) & Callum Brierley (Hagley).
When Nathan Wood (Gaudet Luce) & Callum Jones (Bromsgrove) won for Simon's Team against George Stephens (The Vale) & Teddy Fee (Gaudet Luce) Simon held a 2 - 1 lead, with the final match still out on the course.
The last match went to Jamie's pair of Joe Meads (Blackwell) & Lewis Tolley (Worcester G&CC) with a narrow victory over Sonny Priestley (Gaudet Luce) & Oliver Badger (Hagley) so that the overall match ended in an honourable draw 2 - 2.

After the match the boys, and officials, all enjoyed a meal in the Bromsgrove Club House before the two team captains, Tom Lennon for Simon's Team & James Humphries for Jamie's Team thanked everyone for organising the day. They also both thanked Bromsgrove GC for hosting the match, and providing an excellent course, and good quality food. In response both Simon & Jamie thanked their lads for turning out to represent them and wished them all well for the season ahead.
Finally, County Chairman and Junior Organiser, Bill Thompson, once again thanked Bromsgrove GC for hosting the match. Bill also praised the fantastic Bromsgrove GC course and the welcome and professional service provided by the clubhouse staff. He also thanked the boys and the two coaches for their hard work over the Winter.
