The long delayed U14 Boys match (postponed from World Cup Final Day on 15th July) against Warwickshire took place at Bromsgrove Golf Centre on Saturday 22nd September.
The delay obviously suited both teams, who both fielded their strongest sides of the season. Indeed the highest handicap of the 20 boys on display was 12.
Whilst the weather was wet all day, and the temperature quickly dropped as the afternoon turned into early evening, it did not affect the quality of the golf from all the players.
In the first match Hugh Adams (Hagley) and Harvey Jones (Kings Norton) were 1 down coming up 18. However, Harvey just failed to chip in for an eagle 3, whilst Hugh made a solid birdie 4, both of which were enough to win the hole to ensure a half point.
In the 2nd and 3rd matches, some good golf from the pairings of James Ilsley (Dudley) & Dan Wakeman (Hagely) and Sam Rowbottom (Kings Norton) & Louie Stott (Bewdley Pines) was not quite good enough to win their matches.
Thus, we were 2 points behind with the last two matches out on the course, and needed to win both to draw the match. With Tom Lennon (Halesowen) & Mark Hewlett (Gaudet Luce) making fabulous up and downs on 15 and 16 respectively, they headed to the 17th tee 2 up. All 4 players hit beautiful shots to the heart of the green and the Worcestershire pair managed to win 2&1.
The final match saw Elliot Jones (Gaudet Luce) & Santino Francolini (Fulford Heath) 4 up after 7 holes, but they were pulled back to all square after 11 following some spectacular golf from The Warwickshire pair. This could have deterred many other golfers, but Elliot and Santino are made of stern stuff and managed to edge back to 2 up with 2 to play. The 17th is not an easy par 3, playing some 180 yards, but once again all 4 players hit great shots onto the green. A nice 2 putt from Santino was enough to half the hole, to ensure another 2&1 victory for Worcestershire.
Overall a well fought match between 2 very strong teams, ended in a 2 1/2 - 2 1/2 draw.
With darkness falling the players and officials retired to the lovely Bromsgrove club house, for an excellent two course meal. Once again the welcome and service from everyone at Bromsgrove GC was nothing short of superb.
