The under 14 team recorded a fine win against S&H at Gay Hill GC on Sunday 20th Oct.
The result was 3 1/2 - 2 1/2
After heavy rain the day before and during the night everyone was beginning to wonder if the match was going to take place, but as we all arrived so did a little bit of sun. For the last match we decided to go with the lads who will leading the way next season, our only player not eligible to play for the under 14 next season was Jake Kelly, our Captain this season ,
So the Match got under way with Jake Kelly and Alex Band, this and four other matches all went to the last hole, Jake and Alex were 2 down thru 12 but nothing ever gets these two down, Jake being the KING of come backs all year, but it was some awesome play by Alex finishing the last five holes in 1 under par to finish with a fine half, next out were Cameron Green and Rhys Hopkins with some of the best up and downs of the day coming from Cam these two were never down only to have the win snatch from them up the last, but another fine half .
Next out were Luke and Jack, this was a fantastic match with both playing some of the best golf of the day they dominated from the start and won their match 5 and 3, these two are going to be a pairing to watch next season.
Next out were George and Brandon who both played extremely well, again taking it to the last, but this time it was S&H who got the upper hand , it was getting quite tense at this point - the match was at 2-2 and out on the course we still had Aaron in his debut with Max and Luke lane on his own vs. 2 S&H Boys, one being part of the Welsh team. These were both the highlights of the day Aaron and Max coming up the last all square.
The S&H team had all ready got a 6 on this tricky par 5 with Aaron Bryan having a 12 foot putt for half, this for anyone is a big challenge, but with quite a big crowd looking on and in his first county match was there a problem? Aaron proceeded to put it straight into the hole, this was a fantastic display of golf by Aaron and Max never giving in. Match score now 2 1/2 - 2 1/2
The round of the day and possibly the year has to go to Luke Lane, who, after Harry's car had broken down and unable to get there, was playing on his own. The golf he was displaying was truly fantastic. Parents from the opposing team could not get their breath - Luke was 3 up thru 5 holes and keeping his nerve.
Until the weather and events took a turn for the worse on the 16th, Luke, dormy 3 up, had a 3 footer for a birdie and the win. He missed and the rain started to pour down. It was looking as though the two boys from S&H could make a come back. Luke lost 17 so now he was 1 up coming up the 18th the S&H boys were on the green for 4 and Luke had blocked his 3rd shot out right, just missing a conifer. Luke had a tricky chip which he mishit finally leaving the ball on the fringe about 16 feet from the pin. the S&H lads both putted and were close enough for Luke to give them a 6 - the crowd was starting to look on. Luke knew that losing the hole he would only half the match , and the team would only draw. So everything to play for - this was truly the putt of the day; slight break from right to left; the ball was on its way; straight into the hole!
A great cheer from everyone looking on - even the opposing team - now that's what you sportsmanship!!
I would like to thank every one at Gay Hill for being so welcoming, this is a fantastic course and I know all the juniors enjoyed playing it, the S&H organisers and families could not believe how welcoming a golf club could be.
Well Done lads and Well Done Gay Hill, the scene of many memorable County matches in the past and now with a secure future ahead.
I look forward to next Season
