U14's v Gloucs Match Report
The U14's arrived at the Players Club, nr Bristol, looking forward to playing one of their first matches, which followed a typical County match format of foursomes and singles, against our oldest rivals, Gloucestershire.
‘The Players Club’ has two 18 hole courses, a 9 hole Par 3 course and together with first class practice facilities it has become home to many golf professionals competing on the European tours. In a few weeks time it will host a European Tour Qualifying event on their 7,250 yd, Codrington Course.
The boys were playing the shorter, but very testing, Stranahan Course. It was great to see James Humphries (left) making his County debut and some good partner work on some tricky holes led to a one point Worcs lead (3-2) after the morning nine holes of foursomes. The afternoon singles began with the top three players finding it hard going, although in the top match, Harvey Jones (Team Capt) almost pulled off a great recovery before losing 3&1. The rest of the team battled on as the blustery conditions made some approach shots very challenging whilst local knowledge clearly helped the Gloucestershire players on the back nine. Cassius Blake (left) was 5 down at one point but, following a 300yd downwind drive on the 17th, he'd superbly pulled it back to only one down on the 18th. Unfortunately, his tee shot drifted on the wind and it found a bush so he lost by 2 holes. Other matches were all closely fought as they made their way to the 17th or 18th greens but they all tended to go in Gloucestershire's favour. Dan Wakeman (right) played some great golf in a high quality match but it was left to Mark Hewlett, who showed great course management skills, to secure an excellent singles win and remain the only Worcestershire player to be unbeaten on the day. Well done Mark. The overall result was an 11-4 win for Gloucestershire (winning the singles 9-1)

The boys remained in good spirits as they enjoyed their post match meal and Harvey Jones, in his fine Captain's speech, thanked all the County Officials, the travelling parents and the staff at The Players club, for their great support and hospitality throughout the day. He was also keen to wish the Gloucestershire team well and looked forward to welcoming them to Worcestershire for this fixture next year.
