U16 & U14 v Glamorgan - Tuesday 26th May at Morlais Castle Golf Club REPORT
The U16 and U14 teams (and a few parents) assembled at Worcester G&CC at 6am to catch the coach to Morlais Castlet GC for the annual fixture against Glamorgan. The coach set off promptly at 6.30am, and arrived at Morlais Castle just before 8.30am leaving plenty of time for breakfast and full warm up and preparation for the matches.
The U14s were to play 9 holes foursomes in the morning and 18 holes singles in the afternoon, whilst the U16s were scheduled to play 18 holes foursomes in the morning and 18 holes singles in the afternoon. There was a warm welcome from the Captain of the club, and all the staff were to provide a first class service throughout the day. The course has two distinct 9's, both of which were to provide a good test of golf for the boys.
At lunch the U14s were drawing 2 1/2 v 2 1/2, but the U16s were down 1 v 4. The U14s were to lead the way in the afternoon and managed to draw their match 7 1/2 v 7 1/2. A considerable success given that Glamorgan U14s had only ever lost one match before in 14 years. However, the U16s could not match this success and went down 3 v 13, although many of the matches were closer than the final scores might suggest.
Both sets of boys were a credit to Worcestershire and they will all learn form the experience of the day - which is the main aim of this friendly fixture.
It was pleasing to note the support given to the County by Roger Martin, who was to support Tom Warbrick (U14 Team Manager) and the U14 team throughout the day, and Jim Leydon, who provided his support to the U16 team all day.
All involved are already looking forward to the match next year, which will take place somewhere in Worcestershire.
