The team arrived at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club for their final league match of the season. This was a fixture that had been rearranged twice and the conditions were starting to feel very much like winter golf, so it was crucial to try and get this match played. The course had help up pretty well considering the weather the day and night before was very wet.

We agreed to play the foursomes over nine holes due to timings, so a fast start was needed to get ahead in this shortened format. The home side found it tough going to begin with and seemed to be struggling on the greens as holes were lost with three putts. However these were probably caused by some good short game shots from Derbyshire that put pressure on the home team when maybe they weren't expecting it. The resilience of the Worcestershire team was as strong as always, and when Aaron Bryan holed his putt to win the ninth hole and snatch a half point things were all level at lunch.

At lunch we had a team meeting and discussed that as a team we needed to raise our focus on the greens. It was also noted that due to the soft conditions it was important to club up and be more aggressive with approach shots, so that long putts were not left.

This singles started well as our Captain Jack lead the way with a win on home soil. Matches two and three were more close and when Aaron lost on eighteen it was advantage Derbyshire two points to one. Worcestershires middle order was strong, and when Evan, James Yorke, Paddy and Tom Newton won the next four points it put us on the brink of victory. In the end Ben and Luke won well four and two, so the win was secured with little stress. Tom Wakeman unfortunately didn't quite hold onto his lead on eighteen, but a good half point never the less. Tom will undoubtedly be stronger the next time he experiences a crowd on the last hole.

So this brings an end to the league campaign for the under 16 squad. It's been mostly very good victories, but possibly an opportunity missed, as with a full strength team in the Tri-match we may well have been champions. It bodes well for our Defence of the boys West Midlands league in 2018, and we still have the Under 16s county cup and Gloucestershire match to come.

Once again a big thank you to Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club and all their staff for their support with this fixture. Thank you to Roger Martin and all the supporters who stayed to watch in the damp conditions.
