Early Sunday morning the Worcestershire U16 boys team arrived at Little Lakes Golf Club for their first league fixture of the season. As normal at Little Lakes we were greeted by the friendly members and staff and informed about the course and the arrangements they had made for us.
The team was missing our captain Harrison Leaver, so the experienced and in form Harvey Jones stepped in to lead the team. We gathered as a team in the clubhouse and discussed the order and a few key holes that could make the difference. Not all of the team had played the course, but two or three players had played a practise round that week, so we had a fair idea of the course conditions.
Our captain for the day Harvey Jones and his partner Hugh Adams lead the team out in the foursomes and played very solid golf, keeping the ball in play and making clinical pars. This would have been tough for anyone to compete against, and so they won the opening point on the thirteenth green. The following two games were a lot closer and even a spirited fight back from Louie and Sam wasn’t enough, so Derbyshire made it one a piece. The well tested partnership of James Ilsley and Dan Wakeman showed great character winning their point on the eighteenth after being one down with two to play. Unfortunately for the home side Derbyshire took the last two points of the foursomes, so they lead three points to two at lunch.
After lunch the team were refreshed and ready for the singles. Everyone knew that we needed to win the afternoon session at least 6 - 4 to win the match. The afternoon started well as once again Hugh won his point before the fourteenth hole and gave the team a real lift. James Ilsley and James Humphries also recorded big wins early into the back nine, however Derbyshire also had some substantial leads. As the match reached the back nine we could see that it was going to come down to one or two very tight games. Unfortunately for Harvey even though his opponent hit a wayward tee shot on eighteen, he capitalised on his good fortune and made a great par save after chipping out. So this was good enough to beat Harvey one up. Sam Rowbottom looked favourite to win his game after a spectacular approach to the seventeenth, however he narrowly missed the putt and his opponent Tom made a brilliant par save after short siding himself. The momentum was then with Sam’s opponent and he won the eighteenth to claim a half point, and that was the match over.
Match Score Sheet
Overall the team were obviously disappointed to lose this match, but we are a young team and all the players will grow stronger and be better for this fixture next year. As a team the younger players need to have more self-belief and take their chances on the greens if they are going to win at this level. No one gives anything away at under sixteens.
Thank you to everyone that stayed and supported the team, we look forward to seeing you again soon.
