So it was finally time for our first competitive test of the season. The under sixteen squad members have been working hard as individuals and a squad throughout the winter in improve for the coming season. However as much as you try to simulate pressure in training, we need matches like this to test ourselves.

The squad that arrived at Naunton Downs last Sunday was a mixture of experience and players making their County under sixteen debuts. So we decided that mixing the foursomes pairings up would benefit the overall development of each player taking part.

The foursomes started well for Worcestershire as the reliably straight pairing of Hugh Adams and James Ilsley won emphatically 7&6 to put the first point of the day on the board. Games one and three were much tightly contested and it took seventeen holes to separate the pairings, Worcestershire losing one and winning the other. The home side managed to secure the final two games on the course, so Gloucestershire took a slender one point lead into lunch. Overall we felt like playing away on a strange course that wasn’t a bad result.

We held high hopes heading into the singles now that everyone had seen the course and knew what was needed to navigate each hole. Once again Worcestershire’s top end lead the way and we were up early on leading in four our of the first five games through the sixth hole. As the games reached the business end it was looking very tight, except for Hugh Adams’ game that once again was over before he reached the thirteenth tee, winning 7&6. Our Captain Harrison Leave by his own words was playing very average, but made good decisions and grinded out a professional like 2&1 victory. Sam Rowbottom last years under fourteen County Champion closed his game out on the eighteenth to win, followed by debutants James Humphries and Will Chater adding another two points. Once all the single points were added up we had drawn the afternoon singles ten points a piece, but Gloucestershire took the match 8 -7, so congratulations to them.

All in all a great day out and many lessons learned. A real positive is that all the singles games reached at least the seventeenth hole, which shows real grit and determination. Unfortunately we lost three out the five games that played down the eighteenth, so this shows how important it is to take our time, stick to our routines and make good decisions when at the business end.

Thank you to everyone that stayed and supported the team, we look forward to seeing you again soon.
