U16 Team County Championships at Keddleston Park - Sunday 19th October
In their final match of the season, 6 of the U16 squad traveled to Keddleston Park GC in Derbyshire to contest the inaugural U16 County Team Championship. The event is medal strokeplay wth the best 5 scores from a team of 6 to count.
Few of the team had played at Keddleston Park before so it was agreed that the whole team would meet on the Saturday afternoon to make some course planning notes whilst walking the course with the team coach, Ian Henry.
The team returned to the course the following morning to register and warm up. With 9 counties - 54 players - competing the Worcestershire tee times were spread out between 10.20am and 1.00pm. The day was to prove very testing, with winds of up to 40 miles an hour registered throughout the day, although it stayed dry. The course was in excellent condition, although putting was to prove quite difficult with leaves blowing across the greens at 30-40 miles per hour.
Derbyshire were to win the competition with 5 of their players scoring in the 70's - an exceptional performance on the day. Worcestershire finished 6th. Whilst not an individual event, it should be noted that Matt Osborn produced the 3rd best individual score of the day with a gross 74 - CSS 74.
Thanks should go to the parents for making the long journey to Derbyshire, as well as to Mark Ralphs and Ian Henry who shuttled the boys backwards and forwards between the course and the local hotel on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
