The season is now in full swing and believe it or not this was the third of four league matches for the under eighteen boys. The season has started well with a good Four Counties tournament and two solid league wins, so this made this match even more important for our league challenge.

The boys arrived at Hollywood Golf Club early on Sunday morning and seemed confident they could deliver. We had a team discussion about the course as myself and a few others had played here earlier in the week. Connor Thomas had also offered his advice as he is a member and knew how tricky the course could play in such dry fast conditions.

Worcestershire started slowly in the morning foursomes and found the conditions very tough to get to grips with. Most games were scrappy with pars winning holes and holes seemed to be given rather than won. However Jack and Will seemed to be playing the best for the home side and managed to win their game comfortably four and three. Alex and Jake delivered the only other half point as they grinded a half with a couple of wayward drives down the closing holes. Connor and Harry showed great character taking their game down the last after being dormie three down, but a good putt and birdie finished off their hopes of a great come back. So at lunch Worcestershire were three and half to one and a half down, but every player felt we had a lot more to give. After a short team talk every player was very much up for turning this match around.

On the first tee in the afternoon every player seemed confident and seriously focused on the task in front of them. It did feel like we could win every point. Joe our captain once again led from the front. He started slowly once again, but showed great determination to win one up on eighteen after being four down early on. Nathan Slater followed shortly after with a win on eighteen, before Alex and Jake made it four points from the first four. Then big wins came in, Ted Pickering winning seven and six, and local lad Connor also winning seven and five. At this point we were also dormie up in some of the remaining games and we knew the match was ours. However as we’d discussed many times over the years every point could be critical when it comes down to the overall league standings, so everyone still had a job to do. Unfortunately Cameron could not quite win his game, but he battled hard and did all he could over the eighteen holes for himself and the team, I’m sure he has a lot more wins to come. Jack Severn was the last player out on the course. As we stood around the eighteenth green and his ball rolled thought the back in two shots we all knew he’d done enough to secure his point.

So after a slow start we managed another fine victory and sit nicely at the top of the league. However we have one more match against Staffordshire on the 20th August, so will not get ahead of ourselves and will try our best to make it four wins from four.

Thank you to Stuart, Roger and everyone that came along to support on the day. It was great to see more than normal out supporting, and I know the team appreciated the support! Hope to see you in August.
