U18's Four Counties report and pictures 8th &9th April

U18 's at the Four Counties Event - Trentham Golf Club 8th and 9th April

The annual 8 -a -side singles match play competition between Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire took place at Trentham Golf Club over two days on the 8th and 9th of April.

Glorious weather and a course in excellent condition allowed for some superb scoring. Despite some good individual performances, the Worcestershire lads couldn't gain enough points for a team win. The other Counties battled it out to a thrilling conclusion with everything going down to the last few matches. Eventually, after a tense few holes, Warwickshire came first, Staffordshire 2nd, Gloucestershire 3rd and Worcestershire 4th.

Thank you to Staffordshire Golf Union, who were fine hosts, and to Mark Ralphs and Stuart Pritchard for ably supporting the lads throughout the two days.

Report from Mark Ralphs, WUGC Junior Organiser & Coaching Manager

Having just returned home and switched on the Masters I am immediately reminded of the the tournament I have just attended.

It's all about shot selection and execution!

If only I could transplant an experienced head onto young shoulders, and the only way to gain experience is by playing and getting involved in Matchplay. In Matchplay it doesn't matter if you're 2 under par or 2 over par; whether you're playing well or playing poorly; it doesn't affect your handicap. You simply need to take less shots than your opponent on each hole.

I know that all of the lads tried so very hard to win, but in vain. Team Captain, James Robinson, managed two victories, and our two under 16's Nathan Slater and Jake Kelly managed a win a piece, which is very encouraging.

After the heavy defeat to Staffs the lads heads were down and they found it difficult to recover - perhaps trying too hard instead of playing one shot at a time.

There were plenty of positives to be taken from this event. The experience gained by all the lads is invaluable. Hopefully we shall see those positives when next we travel to Trentham for the Boys County 6's on May 27th.
