Match Report - U18s v Warwickshire in WMLeague
Venue : Kidderminster GC on Sunday May 19th
County golf at this level builds character and the ability to cope under pressure. Local rivals Warwickshire, always provide a stern test and this match was no exception so the lads had to be at their very best. Many of the boys in both teams attend the same midland based golf colleges and know each others games extremely well so their was some good natured banter between the players.
Despite the scoresheet showing a 4-1 lead to Warwickshire after the morning foursomes, many of the matches hinged on a few putts over the closing holes. Thankfully, it was Tom Newton (unbeaten during the day) and Brandon Sarfo, who managed to gain a vital point before going into the afternoon singles matches.
After five holes of the singles, the Worcestershire lads were leading in 8 out of the 10 matches. This continued into the back nine and there were some worried looking officials from Warwickshire fearing an incredible come back from the Worcestershire boys. Jack Severn led from the front and was four under for the front nine before winning 3&2 whilst 13 yr old Hugh Adams (14 next week) showed great resilience and won on the last. James Yorke played some superb golf and after some tough results recently he finally secured that all important win with a fine 5&3 victory. Meanwhile, James Bishop and Tom Newton tactically outplayed their opponents and romped home with 5&3 wins. Evan Lewis, Tom Wakeman and Harvey Jones all took their opponents to the 18th before losing narrowly. Harvey's playing partner, Jacob Parsons, hit his 2nd shot to 3ft on the 17th for an eagle and drove the green on the 18th for a closing birdie. This is as good a finish as you're likely to see in any match as the two teams and all the officials applauded from the side.
Back Row LtoR: Roger Martin, James Yorke, Jack Severn( Captain),Aaron Bryan, Evan Lewis, Tom Newton
Front row LtoR: Tom Wakeman, Brandon Sarfo, Hugh Adams, Harvey Jones, James Bishop
Overall, the singles matches ended 5-5 with the match being won by Warwickshire 9-6. It was played in a great competitive spirit, acknowledged by both captains in their speeches. They were also very praiseworthy of the Kidderminster course, which was in excellent condition with fast, true greens and the catering services throughout the day were first class.
Both Captains thanked Worcestershire County Golf and would like to pass on their gratitude to Kidderminster GC for hosting the match and to all the County Officials, from both teams, including Will Painter (Kidderminster Club Captain and WUGC Past President) for attending and supporting this Midland League fixture. The Worcestershire U18 Captain, Jack Severn, was magnanimous in defeat and wished Warwickshire every success for the remainder of the season.
