Under 14 at Aberdare v Glamorgan on 26th May
U14 Team v Glamorgan at Aberdare G.C, 26.5.13
Match Report by Gregory Hopkins
The day started very early with everyone meeting at Droitwich Golf club at 7am. Two hours 30 minutes later we were faced with our first big challenge of the day which was a steep hill with a tiny bridge and Mountain Ash golf club at the top. After 15 minutes of carefully guiding the bus over the bridge, we reached Mountain Ash G.C. and dropped off the under 16s, who, at this point, were running late and had to run straight on to the 1st tee *see under 16s result .
Then came our next challenge! The bus route to Aberdare Golf Club followed a narrow house lined street. It was so narrow it could hardly fit a small car in yet alone a big coach. After reversing the bus, getting stuck on a sign that read 'danger of death' with the back window smashing in and having been blocked by a train bridge with a height restriction we finally arrived and got the match underway.
We started with a great result for Nathan Slater and Andrew Bak by taking the first point and the pair extended their unbeaten record this year. Another point came from Josh Marshall (First county Match) and Luke Rolinson who chipped in to win 2/1. At lunch we were 3/2 down and looking forward to the singles. First out was Nathan who was very unlucky and battled as hard as he could but his opponent was the under 16 Welsh international player and was very hard to beat. However, this was followed by a fantastic result for our Captain, Jake Kelly. winning 7/6. All the other boys put in sterling performances with George Westwood playing some fantastic shots and just losing his point on the 18th but the performance of the day had to go to Joe Price who won 2/1 against a lad with handicap 7 shots better than him and also a future Welsh International. The final result was 11 /4 on the day, which, after such and adventurous journey and being up against a very strong Glamorgan side it was a good day for the lads.
I would like to thank Aberdare Golf Club for the fantastic hospitality and the use of their course. Martin ( Glamorgan Chairman) and all at Glamorgan County officials ran an extremely well organized day. Over the past 10 years Glamorgan have an incredible record and I would like to thank Martin ( Chairman) and Mal (Secretary ) for giving me an insight in to how their under 14s have achieved this and giving me some pointers as to how we could help develop our County under 14 s to be the best. Also, I'd like to pay a massive thanks to Mark Ralphs for helping organize the day and to all the parents for their help. In addition I'd like to thank the Coach driver for getting us there I know it was very stressful , but my biggest thanks is to the whole of the under 14 team for doing our County proud by being polite at all times as well as always having a smile on their faces, especially when things were beginning to go wrong.
