As I arrived at Burghill Golf Club the weather was bright and dry following another wet evening and night. A large puddle was still visible on the back of the eighteenth green so it was quickly decided to have preferred lie on closely mown areas and relief from embedded balls through the green.
There had been a few selection changes since the last under eighteen match, so we discussed as a team what pairings would be best for the foursomes. Three or four of the team had played the course before, so they shared with the team a few ideas and some information on the course.
We started well on the front nine and most pairings got their noses in front. The one match that we found ourselves two down in through seven was the top match with Nathan and Jake. They however showed great character and turned the match around to deliver the first point to Worcestershire with a 5&3 victory. The following four matches out on the course were very close and three of them went the whole distance. Ollie and Will were very clinical on eighteen and held on to their lead to win, but at lunch there was nothing separating the teams.
In the singles our top order started very well as we won three out of the first four matches. Jake Kelly had a fantastic afternoon winning 8&7, but equally Joe battled hard for his point which he secured on the eighteenth. Shropshire and Herefordshire clawed a few points back in the middle order except for Ollie’s match which he won 3&2. Alex maintained his unbeaten record for the day as it became obvious the last game out on the course would decide the outcome of the match. As we arrived at the seventeenth Chris was one down and had found an awkward lie in the fairway bunker. He did what he could from the bunker and eventually gave himself a putt to take the game down the last. Unfortunately the putt slipped by so Shropshire and Herefordshire took the win by the finest of margins.
Alex Band at Burghill Valley.
Unfortunately we didn’t quite have enough to win this match, however it was played in good spirits and was a very fun day for both teams. I’d like to thank Burghill Valley and Charles for their hospitality throughout the day. We look forward to this fixture next season.
