The Worcestershire team gathered at Hagley Golf Club for breakfast and a team meeting. This was a new looking side with almost half the team made up of the under sixteen’s that had faired well the previous week. It was nice to see that almost everyone knew each other from competing in teams in previous years or being paired together in the new Order of Merit events. Thank you to Joe Price, as a home member he had collected the pin positions and shared the information with the rest of the team. We then talked briefly about what holes required the tee shot to be positioned and how t focus on a good target rather than steering the ball away from trouble.
The morning was overcast and quite cold, but before too long the sun was breaking through and warming us up. The wind was quite strong and definitely affecting club selection, so it was good to see how the boys coped.
Through the opening seven holes Worcestershire seemed to be just edging the foursomes matches, however only by one hole. Unfortunately lack of playing experience would be our down fall with Worcestershire losing all five matches mainly on seventeen and eighteen. This is something as a young team we must learn from and be better for next season.
A special mention must go to Jamie Thomas of Kington Golf Club. He seemed to be having a good day, especially as he finished his match against Nathan and Will with a hole in one! This was a fine way to finish the match.
The singles followed a similar pattern with Worcestershire not quite having enough matchplay experience or belief against this older Shropshire and Herefordshire team. Most of the matches went to sixteen and seventeen but just sliped away from our boys. However our Captain for the day Lawrence Hill lead by example winning well 5&3 and Charlie Beesley showed great battling qualities as he managed to grind out a half point in the final match on the course. It was good to see that all the boys that stepped up from the under sixteen’s didn’t look out of place and Nathan Slater showed fantastic focus to start his under eighteens career with a 3&1 win.
So unfortunately it was another defeat in the league and now we can not challenge. We will battle on though and try to restore some pride for our remaining matches against Derbyshire and Staffordshire. You do sometimes learn more in defeat than you do in victory.
I would like to thank everyone at Hagley Golf Club for their hospitality and use of a course that was in fantastic condition. I look forward to our next match in six weeks time.
