The last match of the Worcestershire Boys season saw us taking on the already West Midland league champions Staffordshire. The match was hosted at Hagley Golf & Country Club, which is perfectly set up for such a match as it has excellent practise facilities and near to the first tee. We knew Staffordshire were going to be strong, but everyone was up for the challenge.
The first foursome game was a tight affair with holes rarely being exchanged. A new pairing of Matt Osborn and Jake Kelly seemed to work well, but unfortunately they narrowly lost on the seventeenth hole. Joe Price and Nathan Slater showed great chemistry and won their game four and three, maybe a new pairing for 2017. The next two points went to Staffordshire before an exciting finish in the final game. Rhys Hopkins and Chris Crisp (in his final County junior match) fought back from three down with four birdies on the back nine to force their match down the last. They held their nerve to win on eighteen and at lunch we were three two down.
The singles wasn't quite so tight as the Staffordshire team now knew the course and their stronger handicapped players at the top of their order started to play well. The boys stuck in and battled hard, but we lost five out of the first six points so the match was lost. However we had targeted to take more points than any other team this season (4 ½) so the lower order stuck to their task. We managed to win two and a half points from the final four available, with Rhys and Chris making it two points from two as individuals. Connor Thomas (on his debut) finished with a par on eighteen to win his first half point in under eighteen golf and to take the Worcestershire Boys team to five and a half points total.
So we ended the season with a league defeat, and not the league campaign we wanted. However we have had some good results in the under eighteen tournaments, so with some hard work and a little more experience behind us I hope next season will be a different story.
I'd like to thank Stuart Pritchard and Roger Martin for their support throughout the day and all season. I know the boys really enjoy having support out on the course and it certainly makes a difference. Thank you to Hagley Golf & Country Club for their hospitality throughout the day, I look forward to returning soon.
Finally today saw the following boys bid fair well to Junior County Golf:
Matt Osborn – The Abbey Golf Club
Chris Crisp – Worcester Golf & Country Club
Ben Finch – Worcester Golf & Country Club
Harry Lane – Wharton Park Golf & Country Club
Nathan Grant – Redditch Golf Club
Lawrence Hill – Stourbridge Golf Club
George Manser – Bewdley Pines Golf Club
I'd like to thank them for all their efforts thoughout the last few seasons, and wish them all luck with their golf in the future. I hope to see you all soon competing in the 2017 County Championship and other county teams.
