On Sunday morning the Worcestershire Boys team gathered at Wolstanton Golf Club in Newcastle under Lyme. The season has flown by and winter coaching is fast approaching. This year we have seen many new players to come through the ranks to make their boys team debuts and I’m looking forward to seeing them progress. Sunday was another opportunity for the boys to test themselves against an experienced team.
We started the foursomes in glorious sunshine, but we all knew the weather would turn early afternoon. The team warmed up and made their way to the first tee. Matthew Osborn our Captain struck the first Worcestershire ball and found the green safely, which became the pattern as most of the boys followed his lead. However the wind continued to build in strength and combined with playing a new course the Worcestershire team started to slip behind. Unfortunately a narrow defeat for Ben Finch and Chris Crisp on eighteen and a fighting half point from Jack Severn and Rhys Hopkins were the only highlights from the morning play. Staffordshire lead at lunch ten and a half to half.
After lunch the boys were recharged and ready to go. Our new target was to try and win at least six points from the ten singles matches so we’d win the singles. However we new this would be tough, but very achievable. Matthew Osborn and Ben Finch our most experienced players won well four and three, which was then followed up by a win on eighteen by Chris Crisp. The singles matches were closely contested with five games completing all eighteen holes. Unfortunately for Worcestershire three of the five matches went to Staffordshire, but we were very close to pulling off a great come back. Staffordshire in the end took six more points to win the match 10 ½ to 4 ½ . Congratulation to the Staffordshire Boys.
Once again though we had lost too many points in the foursomes and made it hard for ourselves. I think this is down to a lack of experience and the mental challenges that foursomes creates. We will work on our pairings and practise hard for next season.
I’d like to thank all the boys for there efforts this season. We may not have challenged this year but it will not be long if everyone continues to work hard. Thank you to all the golf clubs that have kindly supported junior matches this year. A big thanks to Mark Ralphs our County Junior Organiser and Stuart Pritchard our Secretary, without their hard work and dedication boys county golf would not be possible.
