The Team arrived at Blackwell Golf Club early for breakfast and a team meeting. All the team seamed fit and ready for the challenge that lay ahead. The President had put together a strong team and possibly the strongest team we’d face all season, so the boys were ready for a tough match but one that would be very rewarding to win.
Foursomes are something we struggled with last season and have practised throughout the winter coaching. We have taken a lot into account when trying to select our pairing and I was confident the boys felt comfortable with their partners.
The first three matches were very tightly contested with some very good golf on show. Matthew and Nathan were four or five under par in the top match, but only won 2&1. Nathan Slater and Oliver Lowe battled hard to come back at the Derbyshire guests but unfortunately for them and the team came up just short losing on the last. Joe and Ben would be the first to admit their game wasn’t as pretty to watch. However between them they managed to par the last to win one up. The largest winning margin came from Jake and Harry with a 5&4 victory, from what I head a fantastic display of short game kept their momentum all the way round. However the final two points went to the president’s team and tied the scores up at three all.
This was a positive for the boys and hopefully something we can build on going into the league matches.
The singles were as tightly contested as the foursomes, with matches going pretty much all the way until the closing holes. Points started to come in, but again evenly split between the two sides. So it finally came down to the twelfth and final game out on the course. Phil managed to get one ahead as he walked to the 17th tee, and as we gathered to watch Phil and Alex’s approaches to the 17th green Phil was the first to play. He played a magnificent shot that pitched and stopped within four inches of the pin. Unfortunately for Alex and the boys team this shot of the highest standard sealed the win and a halved the match overall. In fairness to both teams this was the right result and a friendly way to finish. The boys team continue their unbeaten start to the season and we now head to the Four Counties Tournament.
Thank you to the President Mr Painter and all of his team for coming out and playing the boys. I hope you enjoyed playing against the future of our county teams and as always they will give you their best game. We all wish you all well for the fast approaching season.
Thank you to Blackwell Golf Club for their hospitality throughout the day, we look forward to returning one day soon hopefully. I’d personally like to thank Mark Ralphs and Stuart Pritchard for all their support throughout the match, I know the boys appreciate it.
