So it was finally the first league match of the season and our opening match was at home against Warwickshire the reining champions. Our Captain was away playing in the Fairhaven Trophy and with exams some players were unavailable, but this gave others in the squad an opportunity to show what they are capable of.

We gathered for a team meeting at breakfast and discussed the course, pairings and a couple of potential rulings that could crop up due to the heavy rain all night. All except two of the team had played the course several times so we made sure the parings were set up not only to suit each others games but to also split the two players that hadn't played Hollywood before.

The Foursomes started very promisingly and even though on paper we were the underdogs we lead four out of the five matches through nine holes (although two matches were extremely close). In fact four out of the five matches went up eighteen with two being halved and one win a piece in the others. At lunch Warwickshire narrowly lead 3-2, but it could have quite easily been different.

At lunch the captains and I discussed how to approach the singles bearing in mind we needed to win six points to win the match. As Warwickshire are pretty strong throughout we decided to use an order of play that would put our strongest players in a position to get the momentum turning in our favour. The boys tried extremely hard but we only managed to take another three and a half points to add to our two in the morning, so ultimately Warwickshire won the match 9 ½ – 5 ½. On a positive note Nathan Grant recorded an excellent victory in the singles winning 7&6 and Jake Kelly birdied the last to beat Tom Cleaton who recently qualified for the Faldo Series final.

Lots to learn as individuals but as a young team we will learn to develop and come back stronger for our next match. Congratulations to Dean Guy and all the Warwickshire Boys team. Also a big thank you as always to Stuart Pritchard, Mark Ralphs and Hollywood Golf Club for all your help and hospitality.

Next stop the MGU England Golf Sixes Qualifier.
