Players from 14 clubs gathered at Bromsgrove GC to contest the 3rd running of the Worcestershire & Herefordshire Mixed Tournament. This year the format was 18 holes 4BBB.
The Bromsgrove GC course was in superb condition, and was to prove a stern test for the players. If you haven't played the course recently it is highly recommended, with tight, tree-lined fairways and beautifully shaped holes, such that no two holes are similar.
Prizes were available for the best three scores, and for the best front and back 9. The early leaders were Linda & John Whitehead( Droitwich) with 41 points, but they were quickly overtaken by Pauline Cook (Bromsgrove) & Ian Cornelius (Kings Norton) and Helena Kilgariff & Gerald Woodcock (Bromsgrove) both posting an excellent 43 points.
There were no further changes at the top of the leader board for some time, until Di & Jim Wilde (The Worcestershire) posted 44 points, and Carl & Gail Hewitt (Bromsgrove) returned 43 points.
Other notable scores came from Judy Taylor & John Parsons (Kidderminster) and Diane & Paul Meakin (The Worcestershire) with 40 points, and 42 points from Jim & Amanda Sylvester (Wharton Park). Jim and Amanda's score was boosted by a hole in one by Amanda on the 11th hole!
No other pair would beat the score from Di & Jim Wilde, so they won the County Mixed Salvers and commemorative plaques
Di & Jim Wilde with Yvonne Foley (W&HLCGA President)
Pauline Cook & Ian Cornelius took 2nd place on count back, whilst Helena Kilgariff & Ian Cornelius took 3rd place, also on count back.
Linda & John Whitehead took best front 9 on count back, and, in the closest result of the day, Diane & Paul Meakin took best back 9 from Carl & Gail Hewitt by virtue of the best last hole!
Yvonne Foley, President of the Worcestershire & Herefordshire Ladies County Golf Association, made the presentations. Yvonne thanked Bromsgrove GC for hosting the event, for producing a course in such good condition, and for the bar and catering staff who looked after everyone so well all day. She also thanked the volunteers for running such a professional event; Dave McDermott for starting; referees Clive Werrett and Colin Mitchell; and the administration team of Tony & Sue Edwards, Denis Hayes and Dave McDermott.
The ever present County administration team of (l-r) Dave McDermott, Tony Edwards & Denis Hayes, all looking very studious!
On accepting the County salvers and plaques, Di Wilde also expressed her thanks to Bromsgrove GC and the volunteers running the event.
Bromsgrove GC was a perfect host for the event, and the County look forward to returning in the near future.
