As the tail end of hurrican Bertha hit the United Kingdom, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire and Staffordshire prepared to play for The Shires Triangular Trophy. This trophy has been played for since 1998 and the team that amasses the most points from their two matches wins the trophy.
This year it was Worcestershires turn to host the event and Dudley Golf Club were kind enough to allow us the use of their course. The course was presented well and the elevations combined with the high winds and rain tested the boys to their maximum.
At lunch Worcestershire were in the strongest
position with a four two lead over Staffordshire and three three all
square with Shropshire and Herefordshire. However when there are
twelve singles points up for grabs in the afternoon anything can
Staffordshire rallied in the afternoon and took
the first three points from Worcestershire. This opened the game
right as they were on top in their match with S&H. Worcestershire
beat S&H in the singles to secure that match before concentrating
on an ever tightening match
with Staffordshire. Nathan Slater made a fantastic birdie on the
final hole to win the last point on the course but unfortunately it
wasn't enough as Staffordshire beat Worcestershire by one point.
However what we didn't know at that point was that
Nathan's crucial eighteenth hole winning putt had secured us a tie
with Staffordshire for The Shire Trophy.
Congratulations to all the team for a brilliant
effort in probably the windiest conditions they will ever play in.
I'm sure all the boys will gain from this experience.
The under sixteen’s are next in action at
Droitwich on the 22nd August again Warwickshire.
