With various national tournaments taking place around the country our top three players were missing from this match. However this gave a lot of under sixteens the opportunity to gain valuable experience and prove themselves against older more experienced players from Shropshire and Herefordshire. I was confident that even with seven under sixteens we could give a good account of ourselves.
The morning foursomes were mostly closely contested rubbers with the biggest result being a 3 & 1 victory in the top game to Shropshire and Herefordshire. The remaining four games went right to the wire with two being decided on eighteen. Unfortunately we were only able to finish with 1 ½ points with the final two games finishing more in Worcestershire’s favour. The margins were tight and maybe one decision, one putt or a chip slightly closer could have turned the match the other way. A lot to learn and take away for future practise.
The singles was always going to be a challenge with Worcestershire needing six and a half points to turn this match around. The boys were told to take on extra water and stay in the shade when possible to save as much energy as possible as the heat continued to rise. The results started to come in and similar to the morning a lot of the rubbers were very close as six games went at least to the seventeenth. Again the crucial shot or decision looked to be going to the home side and hope slipped away that we could get a result. However the attitude and commitment from the tail of the order was fantastic. Ben Finch won well 5 & 4 and Matt Osborn took the final match to the eighteenth but unfortunately pushed too hard and lost two down.
So in the end a disappointing result but a lot of positives to be taken away. This young team that will no doubt be the core of the boys team for the next three years has gained valuable experience and must learn from their one or two mistakes. I believe that this team of mostly fifteen year olds will be a team to be proud of in the near future. Well done all.
Thanks to Charles Sievewright and Shrewsbury Golf Club for your hospitality throughout the day. Well done to your team. I’d like to thank Mark Ralphs and Stuart Pritchard for their support throughout the match, I know the boys appreciate it.
