Worcs U14 match report v Glamorgan on 29th May 2014

Worcestershire Under 14's v Glamorgan Under 14's

Halesowen G.C. 29 May 2014

What a welcome awaited the players and officials of both counties from the President, Captain and staff of Halesowen Golf Club. Everyone was greeted enthusiastically, nothing was too much trouble and very quickly we all felt ' very much at home. '

The match was always going to be difficult. Glamorgan at under 14 level are very strong with their initial coaching starting from 8  years of age so by the time they are 14 yrs old they've had a great deal of additional support.

A full point from Cameron Green and Harry Pugsley in the foursomes top match was a very fine start. This was followed by a half from Alex Band and Rhys Hopkins which gave our team a great deal of confidence. Unfortunately, we couldn't maintain this early success and went down 3.5 to 1.5 in the morning session.

The individual strengths of the well coached and more experienced Glamorgan boys came through in the singles.
It was not for the lack of effort and application from our boys, but, I feel, a lack of experience at this level. As a result, the team went down 10 rubbers to nil with some heavy defeats, but a special mention should be made about Jack Severn's performance. His resilience, determination and level headed approach was very impressive.

I must congratulate Glamorgan on a very comprehensive victory and again thank everyone at Halesowen including the Professional staff,  the greens staff, Dave and the kitchen staff (for the wonderful food) Martin, Halesowen's Captain and finally, but not least, Trevor, Halesowen's President.

We shall be returning very soon after that wonderful welcome.
