WUGC Club Team Handicap Tournament - held at Kings Norton GC on Tuesday 9th May 2017 - REPORT

The second annual Club Team Handicap Tournament (for players with handicaps in the range 10-28 on the day of entry) was held at Kings Norton Golf Club on Tuesday 9th May 2017. Well over 100 players from across Worcestershire were competing in the 3 man club team event for the David McDermott Bowl. The format was full handicap stableford, with all three scores to count for the team event, meaning that every shot in every game was crucial. The tournament also includes an individual event, with the Brenda Smith Cup for the winner.

With each team's players being spread evenly throughout the day, it was very difficult to spot potential winners until the final hour or so. However, with two good scores posted, the teams from Hollywood B, Redditch B, Worcester G&CC B, Churchill & Blakedown B, Stourbridge B, Bromsgrove B, Hagley G&CC A and The Worcestershire B were all in the mix. When Dean Pointon from Gaudet Luce A team returned a fantastic 3rd score of 40 points, his team leapt to the head of the leader board with a total of 104 points.. However, in one of the last few matches, Chris Howles from Churchill & Blakedown B returned a solid 35 points, which added to scores of 37 by Phil Jefferson and 34 by Gary Williams, left them overall winners on 106 points.

The Individual event was to prove as close as the Team event, with scoring very good throughout the day. 6 players had 37 points but this was not quite good enough on the day to finish in the prizes. Barry Wilson had 38 points but also lost out, on countback.

5th place went to Robert Ryan (Hollywood B) and 4th place went to Stan Jones (The Worcestershire A) both with 38 points. 3rd place went to Keith Hobbis from Hagley G&CC A with an excellent 39 points. Two players both scored an exception 40 points, Dean Pointon from Gaudet Luce A and Radley Plotegher from Redditch A. However, first place went to Radley with an extra-ordinary back 9 of 26 points, which included an eagle 3 on the last - probably the best back 9 score ever seen over the Red Loop at Kings Norton GC.

Grenville Rose (WUGC President) headed the presentation party, with David McDermott presenting his own named team trophy. Grenville was happy to pass on the players thanks to Kings Norton GC for hosting the tournament, and thanked all the staff at KNGC for looking after everyone so well throughout a long day. The course was in fine condition and thanks were expressed to the Greens team.

Grenville also pointed out the  thanks due to the volunteers who gave up so much of their time to make the event a great success: Dave McDermott, Ken Palfrey and Rex Harrison for starting and helping on the scorers desk, and  the referees Brenda Binnie, John Brothwood and Tony Edwards for spending hours on the course on another very cold day.

Both Radley and Chris on picking up their trophies, were also keen to thank Kings Norton GC for hosting the day and both thanked the County for running an event in which higher handicappers could compete for County Honours.
