Having only had one inter-county team match since June, the competitive juices were flowing and the U14 team were keen to wear the team shirt once again and lock horns with their opponents Staffordshire at Bloxwich G.C. for their penultimate match of the season. The individual handicaps of both teams suggested it would be a close contest and that we would have to play very well to be successful which proved to be the case.

In the first match Captain Harry Evans and Ollie Badger established an early lead and were 4 up early on. They were able to build on that positive play on the back 9 and eventually completed a 7&5 victory. Our next 2 pairings of Euan Choi / Max Wesley and Noah Wilson / Harry Fall both took early leads. Euan / Max were able to keep their noses in front despite the occasional setback and eventually won 3&1. However, Noah and Harry's opponents fought back from 4 down with some excellent play including a hole in one at the 15th by the Staffs captain Louis Bailey-Jenkins. This achievement seemed to inspire the Staffordshire team eventually beating the Worcestershire pair on the 17th green. A defeat for our 4th pair of Harry Jones and Alex McVeigh by 2&1 meant that the match score was 2 points each with 1 game still on the course. Our final pair of Ollie Ansell and Oskar Neilson were involved in a close game although they were able to keep a slender lead for long periods of time. Wins on consecutive holes midway through the back 9 gave them a 2 hole cushion with 3 holes to play and a well constructed net par by Oskar on the tricky 17th gave them a deserved win and also completed a victory for the Worcestershire team by 3 matches to 2. Well played everyone.

Our appreciation goes to Simon Roberts and his Staffordshire team for an excellent match. Our thanks also go to Bloxwich Golf Club and to their Captain, ground staff and caterers for their hospitality throughout the day and of course to all our parents for their continued support. And finally to Mark Hewlett for all his hard work and organisation prior to and during the match.

Final Score: Staffordshire 2     Worcestershire 3
