U14’s maintain their unbeaten record

Worcestershire 4-1

What a fantastic day and extra special welcome at Redditch Kingfisher for the U14’s in their match v Staffordshire. The course was in excellent condition and in particular the greens were superb which was noted by many of the boys on both sides.

In the first match it was a tough start for both Alex Perry and Oskar Nielsen who were two down through two holes. The boys dug in early on and this paid dividends on the back nine as Oskar won the 10th, 11th, 12th and 15th holes to turn the match around. Alex Perry then drove the green on the 16th to make birdie and Worcestershire won the match 4&2.

The second match was close throughout. Some superb golf from both Oliver Badger and Max Wesley saw Worcestershire take an important lead on the 16th hole. The 17th was then halved after an excellent bunker shot from Oliver Badger. It meant the match went down the last and the young Staffordshire player held an 8ft putt to win the hole and halve the match.

Hayden Sarfo and Leo Edwards formed a strong partnership in the third match and were 3 up early on. However, some excellent golf from the Staffordshire pair saw them go 1 up on the 13th with a birdie. This sparked Hayden & Leo back into life with some superb golf. Hayden played a lovely approach on the 14th to make birdie and Leo then followed this up with a nett birdie on the 15th to go ahead. Hayden then made a lovely putt on the 17th to win the match 2&1.

In the fourth match Harry Evans and Logan Lawless were 3 up through 8 holes but this then sparked a comeback from the spirited Staffordshire boys. The match was a/s going up the 15th before Worcestershire managed to get in front on the 16th after a spectacular chip in from Logan. The Staffordshire boys then bounced straight back on the 17th which saw the match go a/s down the last. It was left to Harry Evans to hole his bunker shot for a well deserved halve.

In the final match Jake Jeff-Johnston and Nicholas Campbell took control early on. A fantastic up and down from Jake on the 9th hole saw Worcestershire remain a/s after nine holes. The next three holes were then crucial as Nicholas had a lovely par to go 1 up and Jake then followed this with back-to-back birdies to see Worcestershire win 3&2.

I would like to thank Redditch Kingfisher GC for such great hospitality on the day. In particular Paul who helped start and Marcus who oversaw the operations. Thanks to all the members for their help and being so positive towards the juniors. A huge thank you to both Greenkeeper’s who had clearly worked hard to get the course in such good condition. Finally, thanks to both Mark Evans and Ian Griffiths for their invaluable help on the day.
