Following their first loss of the season, the U14's match against Derbyshire at Little Lakes G.C. was an opportunity to put that defeat behind them, work on their games and return to winning ways.
It is always a pleasure to welcome a debutant to the County team and we were delighted that Harry Jones was able to make his first appearance and represent the Worcestershire County Junior team.
It was always going to be a challenging game against Derbyshire on a difficult course. Our first pair of Harry Evans (capt) and Alex Perry started well and generally appeared to be in control of their match, they eventually ran out 3&1 winners. However, it seemed that our remaining pairs were having difficulty keeping in touch with Derbyshire in the early stages. Jake Jeff Johnstone and Harry Jones found the going tough and lost their match on the 14th green. Harry Fall and Ollie Ansell were 2 down early on but fought back to level their match on the 6th green and then impressively went on to win their game 5&3. Our third pairing of Euan Choi and Max Wesley were involved in a very tight game which came down to the 18th where Max made a pressurised 4 foot putt to halve the hole and their match. The most impressive comeback of the day came from Hayden Sarfo and Ollie Badger. Despite being 3 down on two occasions during their match, they showed great fighting spirit in winning the last 4 holes to complete a 1 up victory on the 18th. Fantastic!
Congratulations to all the team for their hard fought victory. This result enabled Worcestershire to achieve a 3.5 - 1.5 win.
Two of our team, Hayden Sarfo and Ollie Badger are playing in the prestigious Reid Trophy in early August and we wish them both the very best of luck.
Thanks to Matt and James the Derbyshire officials and their U14 Derbyshire team for an excellent contest. Once again Little Lakes G.C. were excellent hosts and our thanks go to both the catering and ground staff and to the local members. Also thanks to Mark Hewlett, Jon Whitehead and all the family members support during the day.
