Six juniors made their county debuts in the U14's first match of the season against Warwickshire at Copsewood Grange Golf Club. There were 6 matches played over 18 holes and with the pairings appearing to be evenly matched it suggested that it would be a close contest which proved to be the case. Our 4 most experienced players of Harry Evans (capt), Alex Perry, Ollie Badger and Euan Choi were playing in the first 2 matches and both established early leads to get the team off to a positive start. It was then down to the debutantes of Max Wesley, Harry Fall, Ollie Dorril, Noah Wilson, Matthew Griffiths and Oskar Neilson to put their winter coaching experience into a competitive county match which they all did very well despite mixed results.
The pairing of Fall/Wesley played steadily and although they held a narrow lead for much of their match they eventually lost on the 17th green. There was better news for the Dorril / Wilson partnership who were victorious by a margin of 3&2. The anchor pairing of Griffiths / Neilson looked as though they could pull off the comeback of the day as they fought back to only 1 down having been 5 down at one stage. However, their opponents eventually steadied the ship and completed victory on the 17th hole. It was left to the pairing of Alex McVeigh / Ollie Ansell to complete victory with a convincing 5&4 win.
Congratulations to all the players especially those playing in their first match all of whom showed considerable promise. Well done to all the team.
A special thanks to Copsewood Grange G.C. for their exceptional hospitality throughout the day and to the Warwickshire officials. Many thanks to Mark Hewlett and all the families who supported the boys as always throughout the day.
Final score: Warwickshire 2.5 Worcestershire 3.5
