County 6's
Sunday 4th September 2022

The event took place at Longcliffe G.C. in Leicestershire on Sunday 4th September. Players from all 10 counties knew that with the recent weather conditions the course would be fast running and the severe camber on some fairways meant that it would be a difficult test.

Our 6 man team of Harry Evans (Capt), Alex Perry, Hayden Sarfo, Euan Choi, Max Wesley and Oliver Badger were keen to impress in what is the most prestigious U14 boys event on the Midland Golf Union's calendar.

With 3 hours separating our first and last player teeing off it was difficult to get a feel of how each team were progressing but it was obvious there would not be an abundance of low scores throughout the field due to the difficult playing conditions. With only 11 players of the 60 who started breaking 80, scores in the low to mid 80's were acceptable and offered a chance of a good finish. Four of the first five Worcestershire players did just that, but I'm sure they felt that they had all let a few shots slip away. However, the outstanding round of the day came from our final player Ollie Badger.

While the majority of players were battling hard to break 80, Ollie was playing some superb golf and managing the course extremely well. So much so that with only a couple of holes to play he had the chance to shoot the lowest individual round of the day and win the gross prize. A birdie at 16 meant he was 2 under for the back 9 and that another birdie at either of the last 2 holes would see him achieve the lowest gross score. Ollie made par at 17 and gave himself a 12ft putt for birdie at 18 which skimmed the right edge of the hole. So close! Nevertheless, an outstanding round of 74 was the 2nd best gross score of the day and won him the best net prize. A fantastic achievement. Ollie's score of 74 catapulted  Worcestershire into a creditable 4th place which is where we were 'unofficially' ranked prior to the competition.

Congratulations to S&H who won the event by an impressive 15 shots.

Our thanks go to Neil Harris and John Rawson from the MGU, to the staff of Longcliffe G.C. for hosting the event and to all the parents and family members for their continued support. My appreciation also goes to all of our Worcestershire players for their efforts and to Mark Hewlett the County Junior Organiser for his continued dedication to Worcestershire County Golf.
